Nevada Union High School took first place in an Odyssey of the Mind regional competition held March 5 at Natomas High School.

A total of 25 schools and 55 teams competed. Twelve teams from Nevada County schools placed first or second and will compete at the state competition April 9 in Visalia.

Participating schools in Nevada County included Magnolia Intermediate, Scotten School, Lyman Gilmore, Union Hill, Nevada Union High and Bear River High.

John Juneau, a teacher in the Gifted and Talented program at Ready Springs School, gave a presentation at the California Association for the Gifted annual conference in Sacramento on Feb. 26.




The presentation centered on the creation of slide shows and movies using digitized photos, music and video clips. Juneau told the panel he found that students often gravitate toward such projects.

In the process, they work on developing creativity and a variety of

practical skills.

Students at Hennessy School were honored by the Nevada County Chapter of the American Red Cross Friday for raising $1,244.29 in pennies for tsunami relief.

Students collected pennies and stashed them in jars in each classroom. The students were then asked to guess how many pennies were collected in each jar in the classrooms.
