Luke Olts, the son of Jeannie and Wayne Olts of Grass Valley, graduated from the University of San Diego’s Law School in May. He is an attorney with the firm of Lerach, Coughlin, Stoia, Geller, Rudman and Robbins, practicing securities law. He is a 1997 graduate of Bear River High School.

Pleasant Valley School held its first annual spelling bee Jan. 5. Ten fifth- through eighth-graders participated. The winner, seventh-grader Kelsey Calef, won the event by correctly spelling the word “recidivism.”

Eric Hysell, a freshman majoring in preindustrial and manufacturing, has been named to the Oregon State University B-plus Honor Roll for the fall term.

California’s Cal Grant program has begun, allowing qualified high school seniors to apply for as much as $8,300 for college. Applications must be filed by March 2. To obtain a Cal Grant, students must meet certain financial requirements and have a minimum 2.0 grade-point average.

Two forms must be filled out to apply for the grant: the Cal Grant GPA verification form, available from high school counselors; and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov on the Web.
