Douglas DeMartini, a 1995 Nevada Union High School graduate, and Daniel G. DeMartini, a 1997 Nevada Union High School graduate, both graduated from Brigham Young University-Hawaii with degrees in biochemistry this spring.

Douglas plans to attend pharmacy school, and Daniel plans to attend graduate school.

They are the sons of David and Nancy DeMartini of Grass Valley.


Ashley Evans, a 2004 graduate of Nevada Union High School and the recipient of the Golden Empire Flying Association scholarship in 2003, graduated from Nevada County Flight Training recently and has been certified as a private pilot.

Her instructor, Matt Scott, praised her for her dedication for achieving a 98 percent pass rate on her exam.

She will be attending California State University-San Luis Obispo this fall.


The Bear River Lioness Club recently announced its 2004 Scholarship Recipients: LeAnn Chizek, Margie Fuston, Nellie Lira-Giammona and Elizabeth Wilde.

These Bear River High School graduates each received a $500 award. They were selected for their academic performance, strength of character and commitment to community service.

The Bear River Lioness Club has awarded 41 scholarships to Bear River High School students since the club’s formation in 1993.


Jamie Molaro of Grass Valley is among 23 incoming San Francisco State University freshmen selected this year as a Presidential Scholar, the university’s most distinguished academic award for first-time freshmen.

The total value of the scholarship is about $17,000 during four years.

Admission to the Presidential Scholars program is based on academic and personal achievement, extracurricular activities in school and the community, leadership potential and the ability to express oneself effectively.

It is open to first-time freshmen and California residents only. Most applicants have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher and an SAT score of 1200 or higher.

Molaro, 18, will major in astrophysics, and is a 2004 graduate of Bear River High School.

She is the daughter of Cliff and Kathleen Molaro of Grass Valley.
