Heather Anawalt was named to the Dean’s LIst at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her major is anthropology.
She is the daughter of Gary Anawalt and Patt Anawalt, both of Nevada City.
She is a 2001 graduate of Nevada Union High School.
Steven Bestelmeyer was named to the Dean’s List for spring 2004 at Biola University.
The Dean’s List honors students who earned a semester grade point average of 3.60 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more credit units and whose cumulative G.P.A. is at 3.20.
He is the son of Paul and Trish Bestelmeyer of Grass Valley.
He is a 2003 graduate of Bear River High School.
Helen Huggins of Grass Valley was named to the Dean’s List at Valparaiso University for the spring semester 2004.
To be eligible for the Dean’s List, students must achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be enrolled full time.
Huggins is a senior international economics and cultural affairs and German major in the College of Arts and Sciences.
She is the daughter to David and Virginia Huggins of Grass Valley and a 2002 graduate of Bear River High School.
Meghan Mayhood has received the Nanaline H. Duke Honorary Scholarship to Duke University School of Medicine, where she will enter as a first-year medical student this fall.
Named in honor of the late wife of North Carolina industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, the Nanaline H. Duke Honorary Scholarship is offered annually to eight incoming medical students with the potential to become leaders in medicine.
Mayhood has traveled twice to Uganda to help Dr. Scott Kellermann and his wife, Carol, in aiding a tribe of Batwa pygmies through medical care, education and spiritual support. She hopes to use her M.D. to continue reaching out to other communities abroad in desperate need of medical care.
She graduated as valedictorian in 1999 from Nevada Union High School and in 2003 from the University of Colorado with a bachelor of arts in communication.
She is the daughter of Bruce and Kris Mayhood of Penn Valley.
Angelica Smart, a 2001 graduate of Bear River High School, was named to the President’s Honor List at California State University at Long Beach for spring 2004.
She is a liberal studies major in the Integrated Teacher Education Program and earned a 3.8 grade point average while carrying a full course load and working part time in the student bookstore.
She is the daughter of Bill and Bonnie Smart of Grass Valley.
