Michelle Mathis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Saint Mary’s College of California on May 26.

Mathis, a 2003 graduate from Bear River High School, plans to attend the graduate program at Saint Mary’s to obtain a master’s degree in education and a teaching credential.


Peter Weisberg graduated Magna Cum Laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Claremont McKenna College on May 10, 2007.

Weisberg majored, with honors, in Environmental Policy at Pomona College. He’s the son of Susan Gregory and Alan Weisberg of Nevada City.


Ashley M. Wisniewski, a 2002 graduate of Nevada Union High School, will participate in the Pacific McGeorge Summer Program in Salzburg, Austria, taught by Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy.

Wisniewski, a 2006 graduate of the University of California, Davis, has just completed her first year of study at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

She is the daughter of Ed and Lori Wisniewski of Chicago Park.


Chelsea Electra Sharon, a 2003 Valedictorian of Bear River High School, has been accepted into the Ph.D program for Astronomy and Physics at Rutgers University, New Jersey.

Sharon graduated June 8 from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Astrophysics. She was the college’s only Astrophysics graduate this year.

Chelsea’s sister, Haley Sierra Sharon, also graduated June 8 from Bear River High School. Haley will attend Sierra College and pursue a career in nursing.


The FFA program at Bear River High School is having its annual fundraiser dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15 at the Higgins Lions Community Center on 22490 E. Hacienda Drive in Grass Valley.

The prime rib dinner and auction is being sponsored by the Bear River FFA Ag Boosters and The Higgins Diggins Lions Club.

The proceeds of the evening will go to fund the FFA program.

The dinner will consist of a generous portion of prime rib, baked potato, a salad and a dessert. The Higgins Diggins Lions Club will operate a no-host bar.

There will be a raffle, and a live and silent auction at the event. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $40 and can be bought by calling Sean Avera at 885-0953 or Lonna Carlile at 269-1686.
