Students from Magnolia Intermediate School won first place at the 41st California Students Media Festival in the Video Yearbook category for the third time in five years.

They competed against 6,000 students, including high school students. The winners are Michael Jensen, Eden Orrick, Emily Meese, Hilary Olsen, Amy Giroux, Alysia Price, Kevin Botsford, Andy Brooding, Katey Corripo, Ryan Jensen and Tara Sherman.

The students were featured in the April 2 edition of The Union.


Members of the Nevada Union High School Class of ’57 will be having their 50th reunion on June 30. If you are a classmate or you know someone who is, contact Annabelle Robbins at 273-9268.


On May 20, Nicole Porter will graduate from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology, with an emphasis in cell and molecular biology.

Porter is a native of Nevada City and 2003 graduate of Nevada Union High School. She is the daughter of Joyce and Larry Nicholson of Nevada City.

She plans to move to Twenty-Nine Palms after graduation and go into researching medicinal therapies.


Robyn Elizabeth Sanders will graduate from California State University, Long Beach on May 30 with a bachelor of arts in fashion merchandising and a minor in textiles and design.

Sanders is a visual display merchandiser for JCrew stores in Orange County. She’s a 2002 graduate of Nevada Union High School and is the daughter of Tim and Karen Platner of Grass Valley.


A former Nevada City resident has been named a 2007 presidential scholar.

Neal C. Pisenti, of Portland, Ore., is one of 141 American high school seniors selected for demonstrating exceptional achievements in academics, art, leadership, citizenship and service to their school and community by United Stated Education Secretary Margaret Spelling.

The students will be honored on June 23-27 in Washington D.C.

Pisenti attended Gold Run Elementary School and had teacher Sharon Wentworth for both first and second grade.
