Katyann Fellman,10, and Kylie Fellman, 12, students of Ready Springs School, recently won several awards showing pygmy goats at the Gold Country Classic Pygmy Goat Show, in Auburn.
Katyann Fellman’s wether became the champion under three different judges. Her doe also won in the Junior Champion Doe and Reserve Grand Champion Doe categories. In addition, she came first in her age group for showmanship at the youth show.
Kylie Fellman won first place for showmanship in her age group. Her wether won Reserve Champion Wether.
The pygmy goats the sisters showed are from their own breeding stock. The siblings have learned to show goats from Carol Fassino, of the Rough and Ready 4H group.
Carol Fassino’s daughter, Shauna Fassino, also showed her doe, which won the Senior Champion Doe and the Grand Champion Doe categories. Shauna Fassino is a student of Pleasant Valley School.
Bill Douglass, a local jazz musician, is offering a jazz workshop series for instrumentalists and singers of all ages from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 23 and July 1, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. June 22 at the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office.
The cost for each workshop is $20, with a maximum of seven participants per workshop at 112 Nevada City Highway, Nevada City.

The Nevada County Republican Women Federated is again sponsoring the Dictionary Project, providing student dictionaries to all Nevada County third graders in the 2008-09 school year.
As a fundraiser, the group is holding a Collectible Doll Show and Sale from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church. For more information, call Sue Tomlin, 271-0745.
Ready Springs Union School District in Penn Valley is seeking a substitute for Joe Ten Eyck, a board member who resigned recently. The substitute will serve a partial term ending in November with the general election.
Applicants for the position must live in the Ready Springs Union School District in Penn Valley. The application deadline is 3 p.m., June 30.
Those interested should send a letter to Superintendent Jim Voss, giving their background and suitability for the position.
