Private graveside services for Lawrence Tony Ciaffoni of Grass Valley will be conducted at a later date.

Mr. Ciaffoni died Sunday, Sept. 26, at home. He was 84.

He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Portland, Ore., to Cesidio and Anna Domenica (Bove) Ciaffoni. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific, and received the Purple Heart. He married Carolyn Timmen Thurner in 1952, in Washington State. He worked as a sawfiler in sawmills since 1952, arriving locally in 1958, where he worked at Cal Ida, Brunswick, Woodleaf, Feather Falls, Oregon House, Camptonville, Caffey and Rice, Bohemia and Marysville.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Janet of Te Anau, New Zealand; sons Jim of Nevada City, and Larry of Oregon; daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Steve Perry of Penn Valley; daughter, Diana of Oregon; granddaughter, Dana Hamilton of Grass Valley; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jay Perry Cook and Tahirih of Gig Harbor, Wash.; grandson, Aaron Ciaffoni of Nevada City; step-grandson, Zachary Mallette of Grass Valley; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Ciaffoni, in 1981; and son, Gary Ciaffoni in 1996.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
