Last chance to see ‘Alaska Revisited’

Reinette Senum, now of Nevada City, was the first woman to cross Alaska alone – in 1994. She’s been sharing that experience in an animated presentation of storytelling, video and slides for a few years now. But if you haven’t yet seen it or want a refresher, it’s now or never, because Senum is giving her last annual performances Sunday at Miners Foundry in Nevada City, one at 2 p.m. and one at 6.

Her bid for the Nevada City City Council and her energy efficiency efforts with PowerUp-NC and APPLE-NC are keeping her too busy these days for anything else, she said, “although I’ll be happy to continue doing ‘Alaska Revisited’ for organizations, schools or special functions.”

Senum filmed her 1,500-mile, four-month trek for National Geographic. She skied cross-country 600 miles down the frozen Yukon River while pulling a 160-pound sled in -55F temperatures and paddled the canoe she made for 900 miles. And, of course, she did it all with hardly any protection (no radio, tent or gun).

“The story of this journey puts most people on the edge of their seats,” explained Senum, “simply because it generally takes the audience beyond their comfort zone and then ends the story with a wild and unexpected twist of fate.”
