Kerry and free choice

A recent letter-writer labeled Senator Kerry as pro-abortion. This is a misrepresentation, as are so many anti-Kerry statements. Kerry’s stated position is that, as an elected official, he would not impose his religious views on the public in the form of laws. This is similar to the position Kennedy took in his time. An elected official is responsible to all the people, not just those of a certain religious view.

Almost nobody is pro-abortion, but a majority of Americans believe that a woman should have the right to make her own decision on a matter affecting what is within her own body. This is a very difficult decision and the government should not be interfering in her choice.

There are religious people who support a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her body. Each church is free to advise its own people on how to make such decisions, but no religious view should be imposed on all of the people. Kerry is right to support free decision-making on such personal matters.
