Kelly Newell steps down from post

Kelly Newell announced she is stepping down as coordinator for the Coalition for a Drug-Free Nevada County to work with the United Methodist Church as a youth camp director.

“I wasn’t pursuing employment, they found me,” Newell said. Newell plans to continue to work for the coalition just “not in a primary leadership role,” she said. Newell was hired in December and said she intends to stay on until the end of August to allow time to find a replacement.

The Coalition for a Drug-Free Nevada County was established over a year ago when a $500,000 federal grant was awarded through the Community Recovery Resources or CORR.

The coalition works with various volunteers from 12 sectors in the county including law enforcement, parents, schools and faith based organizations to educate youth about drugs.

Newell is the wife of county District Attorney Cliff Newell and says the position with the coalition was never a conflict of interest.

She has a background in education, teaching and youth development. Newell has been a member of the United Methodist Church her entire adult life, she said.

As a director of youth and camping ministry for the Northern California and Western Nevada division of the United Methodist Church, Newell will continue to pursue work she enjoys.

“I’ve been in camping since I was 15 years old. It’s a job that allows me to continue in youth development,” Newell said.
