Kathleen O’Brien Ely

Kathleen “Catalina” O’Brien Ely died Sept. 9 at her home in Grass Valley. She was 54.

Private family services were held Thursday, Sept. 11, at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City. A public celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 28, at St. Joseph’s Cultural Center, 410 South Church St. in Grass Valley. Cremation will take place.

Mrs. Ely was born March 21, 1954, in Bronx, N.Y., to Fay H. Brown O’Brien. She attended Montsserat College in Beverly, Mass., and studied interior design at the University of California, Berkeley. She married Haines Ely on May 3, 2001, in Brazil.

Mrs. Ely worked as an astrologer, an artist, in Real Estate and as a travel guide. She was a SRF (Self-Realization Fellowship) member. She enjoyed interior design, reading, travel and astrology.

Mrs. Ely is survived by her husband, Haines Ely of Grass Valley; daughter, Rose Bliss Galyon-O’Brien of Nevada City; mother, Fay O’Brien of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters Patricia O’Brien of Mill Valley and Noreen O’Brien of Santa Fe, N.M., and brothers Robert O’Brien of Middletown, Conn., and Sean O’Brien of Raybrook, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Michael O’Brien, and her uncle and godfather, John Joseph O’Brien.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
