Kane memorial set for Saturday at Grass Valley vets building

A memorial for John Kane will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building at 255 S. Auburn St., said family representative Rick Tracewell.

Kane, owner of Kane’s restaurant in Grass Valley, died this week from complications with a surgical operation.

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Kane had worked as an executive chef for corporate hotels and was a personal chef to celebrities such as Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr. and Jay Leno, according to the Kane’s website. He was also a chef of the San Francisco Giants 2003-07 and president of the Chefs Association of the Pacific Coast.

He opened Kane’s Family Restaurant in 2006 and just last month unveiled a recent five-month renovation of the restaurant in downtown Grass Valley. He was 59.
