Joseph Vignassa

Memorial services for Joseph Vignassa of Nevada City will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City. Mr. Vignassa died Sunday, May 5. He was 90.

He was born June 10, 1911, in Chicapee, Kan., to Pete and Lucy (Bernardi) Vignassa. He married Mary Frances Re in Santa Cruz in 1935.



After several years as a traveling salesman, he became owner/operator of women’s apparel stores, first in San Mateo and then in San Carlos. He later merged with Schneider’s clothing stores, and worked in the Redwood City store. As a merchant he was active in the Redwood City Chamber of Commerce, the Downtowners Association, Elks, Lions and Odd Fellows.

He enjoyed volunteering as a chef for club events and his daughter’s school fund-raisers. He and Mary retired to Nevada City in 1976. After his retirement, he was a member of the Merrymakers, SIRS, a travel club, and was in the leadership of the Gold Country Italian American Club. His hobbies included ocean salmon fishing and mountain lake trout fishing. He enjoyed playing cards and gardening.




He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Barbara Norris and Sister Doreen Marie; granddaughters Maria and Renee; and great-grandson Christopher.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
