Joseph DeCosta

A memorial Mass for Joseph DeCosta of Grass Valley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, 58 Oak St. in Colfax. Interment will follow at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City.

Mr. DeCosta died Thursday, May 2. He was 90.

He was born May 2, 1912, in Kapakalua, Maui, Hawaii, to Antoine and Justina DeCosta. He was a resident of Sunnyvale for 41 years and had lived in Grass Valley for the past six years.



He worked as a carpenter for 45 years. He enjoyed playing bingo and pool, fishing, gambling in Reno, and watching football and baseball games on television.

He is survived by his daughters Marvilee Fernandez of Grass Valley, Gwendolyn Simpson of Arbuckle, Darlene Ratzlaff of Sulphur Springs, Texas; siblings Mary Durate, Margaret Durate, Alice Cardoza and Sebastian DeCosta, all of Maui, Hawaii; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roseline DeCosta, in 1997.




Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Neptune Society of Grass Valley.
