Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley for John “Jay” T. Wallen of Grass Valley.

He died Monday, Dec. 9, at home. He was 93.

Mr. Wallen was born Feb. 15, 1909, in McKinney, Texas, to John Albert Wallen and Zula Wheisenant Wallen. He was married Mar. 1, 1941, in Crowell, Texas, to Maxine. He was a general contractor, life member of the Carpenters Union and past president of the Grass Valley Carpenters Union chapter. He enjoyed tinkering with small engines, helping neighbors and conversation.

He is survived by his sons, Don Wallen of Sacramento, Roy Wallen and Grady Wallen, both of Grass Valley; daughter, Garnet Ellingson of Grass Valley; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, in 2000, and by brother, Bill Wallen, in 2001.

Memorial contributions can be made in his name to Hospice of the Foothills.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Nevada County launches grant program


On Tuesday, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved $2 million to launch a new “Community Resiliency Grants” program with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, a news release states.
