John Sommerville

John Alexander Sommerville died at his home Sept. 7. He was 82.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.

Mr. Sommerville was born in Oakland to John Alexander Sommerville and Molly McBlain Sommerville, and was raised and educated there. Following his graduation from high school he joined the Merchant Marines and attended Kings Point Academy where he received a bachelor’s degree. Following his discharge from the military, he married Nancy Holley in New Jersey. They were married for 50 years.



In 1974, Mr. Sommerville moved to Nevada County and opened SRC Rental. He had previously owned other retail businesses in the Bay Area. In 1988, he retired and his daughter and son-in-law took over the SRC Rental business. He enjoyed woodworking.

Mr. Sommerville is survived by his children, Dr. Lynn Sommerville, of Providence, R.I., Diane and Mike Buettner of Grass Valley, and John Sommerville of Orinda; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his significant other, Marie “Koko” Berman.




Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.
