John Simmons

Memorial services for John David Simmons will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the Saint Francis of Assisi Church, at 26th and K Street in Sacramento followed by a reception at the family home. For more information call 916-457-7105.

Mr. Simmons died Friday, Dec. 20, at home. He was 65.

He was born on Jan. 20, 1937, in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Cal State Dominquez Hills cum laude with a degree in behavioral science. He worked in the nursing field, was a counselor for Hollywood entertainers, including Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. He was a resident of Penn Valley from 1980 to 1995, owning businesses in the Grass Valley and Penn Valley areas. He most recently worked on state policies for crime victims with disabilities. He was involved with the Self Esteem Task Force, Central Democratic Committee, Nuclear Free Zone Board and issues of peace, free speech and First Amendment rights.



He is survived by his wife, Doreen; daughters, Mara and Shana; mother, Cecilia Valenzeno; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Wes and Lisa Goldblatt; brother, Jim Simmons; sister, Jeanne Simmons; and numerous nieces and nephews.
