John Purdie

Memorial services for John McHale Purdie of Grass Valley will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City.

Mr. Purdie died Monday, Feb. 11, in Grass Valley. He was 62.



He was born on Nov. 27, 1939, in Bathgate, Scotland, to Helen McHale and John Purdie. He served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from St. Mary’s School in Scotland. He married Gail Vaughn Eggleton on Sept. 14, 1982, in Rockport, Mass.




He worked in management positions in sales and marketing for the Times Mirror, Time Warner and Excel Energy. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City and St. Mary’s Church in Laguna Beach. He collected vintage cars, bred birds and fish, and enjoyed birding.

He is survived by his wife, Gail of Grass Valley; stepson, Kurt Vaughn of Oakland; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Heather and Devin Steele of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters Gloria McMahan and Nessie McGuire, both of Scotland; and granddaughter, Georgia Steele.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters June Dickson, May Milne and Kathleen Purdie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
