Memorial services for John Francis Murphy of Grass Valley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grass Valley.

Dr. Murphy died Thursday, Jan. 13, at home. He was 78.

He was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Santa Monica, to John Francis Murphy and Evelyn McMahon. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, in Korea and Japan. He graduated from Loyola University Dental School in Chicago in 1957. He married Marianne on Oct. 6, 1951, in Oak Park, and then married Dorothy on Aug. 15, 2004, in Darren, Ill.

He had a dental practice in Orange County from 1958 to 1965, and then in Grass Valley from 1965 until his retirement 1984. He was a past Hospice volunteer. He enjoyed golf, bridge, tennis, fishing and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons and daughters-in-law Daniel and Cindy Murphy of Redmond, Ore., Jerry and Cissy Murphy of Grass Valley, Tom and Sue Murphy of Camarillo, John and Dee Murphy of Grass Valley, and Kevin and Laura Murphy of Sacramento; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Greg Peters of Penn Valley, Teresa and Robert Blecksmith of Virginia, and Maria and Chris McCaffrey of Stockton; 27 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and Dorothy’s children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mariannne.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
