JoAnn Willis Johnston McGannon " sponsored obituary

JoAnn passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 26, 2007 at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, CA. She had successfully battled metastasized breast cancer for seven years, but succumbed to uterine cancer after a short, two month illness.

Born in Shreveport, LA on August 1, 1934 JoAnn was an avid music lover all her life playing the clarinet. She graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport where she was a member of the band. She majored in performance music at Baylor University and subsequently graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA where she was a member of the marching band.

In 1955 she married Joseph Eggleston (Joe) Johnston IV and they raised their three children in Shreveport, Lafayette, and New Orleans, LA. While in Shreveport she was the choir director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. JoAnn taught music at Ascension Episcopal Day School in Lafayette, LA and began both the junior and senior choirs at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans.

While living in New Orleans, she was a substitute school teacher for Plaquemines Parish School District. After Joe’s death in 1979, she met the other love of her life Richard Lewis (Dick) McGannon and married him in 1982. In 1987 JoAnn and Dick relocated from New Orleans, LA to Alamo, CA when Dick was working for Chevron.

JoAnn was a lay reader and an enthusiastic member of the choir at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Danville, CA. She was an active member of the women’s Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO). JoAnn loved life. She and Dick had tremendous fun in all of their travels. She loved visiting her children and family scattered across the U.S.

She was an avid golfer and always looked forward to playing with the eight couples that met in Maui each year for the past 10 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents Percy and Nancy Anne (Nannie) Willis, brothers Sanford and Frank, brother-in-law George Tidwell, nephew Bob Tidwell, and her first husband Joe Johnston.

She leaves behind her beloved husband Dick McGannon, children Joseph E. (Trey) Johnston V of Los Alamos, NM, Stacy Leigh Johnston Casey of Grass Valley, CA, Montgomery Dean Johnston (Monique) of Plano, TX, grandchildren Brenden, Connor, and Keleigh Casey and Morgan, Madison, and Marshall Johnston, sister Reggie Curtis (Lee) of Shreveport, LA, brother and sister-in-law Tom and June McGannon of Hinsdale, IL, brother and sister-in-law Greg and Olivia Bradley of Shreveport, LA, and brother and sister-in-law Jack and Patricia Johnston of Denver, CO, nephew and nieces John Bradley (Rebecca), Olivia Bradley, LouAnn Tidwell Rives, Mark Tidwell, Juli Johnston Mata (Richard) and Monty Johnston (Linda).

A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on June 30, 2007 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Danville, CA. In lieu of flowers, if you choose, a donation maybe made to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church or a cancer research organization of your choice.
