Joan Hughes

A memorial Mass for Joan B. Hughes of Grass Valley will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grass Valley.

Mrs. Hughes died Saturday, Aug. 24, in Grass Valley. She was 69.



She was born Sept. 6, 1932, in South Philadelphia, Pa., to Charles and Rose Mullen. She attended Catholic school in South Philadelphia and Kay’s Beauty School. She married John T. Hughes on April 6, 1947, in Philadelphia. She worked at a Robert Hall Clothing store and owned and operated the Town and Country Beauty Salon. She enjoyed arts and crafts, knitting, bead work, bingo and traveling in a motor home.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Don Besaw and Ann and Vic Ruiz; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Diane Hughes; son Edward Hughes; daughters Carol and Karen Hughes; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; son John T. Hughes Jr. in 1976; her parents; and nephews Charles Mullen Jr. In 2002 and Michael Mullen in 1998.




Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
