Jesse Winchester to play in Grass Valley

Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, whose songs have been recorded by artists such as Jimmy Buffett, Elvis Costello, Nicolette Larson, Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez and Jerry Jeff Walker, will be at the Center for the Arts Wednesday.

Though he recorded prolifically between 1970 and 1988, Winchester had enough of performing and recording after 1988. Burned out and drinking too much, he decided to focus instead on songwriting.

“You’ve heard the story a thousand times before. It happened to me. I took stock and thought, ‘The only thing making money for me in this business is songwriting,'” Winchester said. “I don’t make any (money) from records, and what little I did make from performing wasn’t usually worth the aggravation.”

In the ’90s, his songs continued to find success from artists including Reba McEntire and Harris. As he continued writing songs for others, though, the desire to play some of his own material came back.

“I guess guilt had a lot to do with it,” Winchester said. “I just felt like I should do it.” That thinking developed into his CD “Gentleman of Leisure” in 1999 and resulting tours.

Peter Wilson opens the Wednesday show at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15. Tickets are at Love Shack Records, Yabobo, BriarPatch, The Book Seller or by calling (800) 594-8499.

The Center for the Arts is at 314 W. Main St. in Grass Valley.
