Jennifer Lela Wread, 58, of Camptonville died Thursday, Oct. 3, at home.

No services are planned.

Ms. Wread was born Dec. 18, 1943, to Lela Mae and Spencer Freeman Wread. She grew up in Southern California and graduated from John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. She moved to Northern California in 1968.

She was an avid outdoorswoman and hiked and camped along the Yuba River. She was a member of an older-women’s soccer team near Palo Alto.

She attended the California Academy of Culinary Arts in San Francisco from 1992 to 1994. She worked as a chef, which brought her to the Djerassi Artists Retreat in Woodside. In December 2001, she moved to Maui to be healed through the Japanese medical art of jorei.

She is survived by her daughter, Joanie Otay Wread of Santa Monica; sisters Gail Wread of Berkeley and Carolyn Mumm of Camptonville; nieces Nina Wread of Arcata and Lelia Moskowitz of Redway; nephews David Mumm of Camptonville, Eliot Wread of Emeryville and Olin Wread of Arcata; and sister-in-law, Lupine Wread of Arcata. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lawrence Wread, in 1999.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.
