Jazz Camp concludes with concert Sunday

This summer’s annual Jazz Camp held at Nevada Union High School concludes Sunday with a concert by the 55 students of all ages and the 10 teachers.

Under the direction of Chicago Park resident Bill Douglass and his Bay Area colleagues, Jazz Camp 2004 is produced by the Sierra Jazz Society, a newly formed nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing jazz education here. In addition to the yearly jazz camp, Sierra Jazz Society’s goal is to present ongoing workshops and concerts throughout the year.

While growing up in Nevada County, Douglass took classes from Don Baggett at Nevada Union High School. Douglass then spent 35 years in the Bay Area playing bass and bamboo flute with hundreds of musicians, including Mose Allison, Marian McPartland, Tom Waits and Paula West.

Sunday’s 7 p.m. concert will be at the Don Baggett Theatre, 11761 Ridge Road in Grass Valley. Admission is $5.

Call Douglass or Nora Nausbaum at 273-5489 or visit http://www.SierraJazzSociety.com on the Web for more information.
