James Purvis

Private services for James Cyler Purvis of Grass Valley will be conducted.

Mr. Purvis died Saturday, March 5, in Grass Valley. He was 90.

He was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Waycross, Ga., to Henry Washington Purvis and Maggie Kirkland Purvis. He served in the U.S. Navy for 25 years. He married Margaret on Oct. 20, 1942, in Parker, Ariz. He worked for Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital as a purchasing agent. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Fleet Reserves and the Masons. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and being a handyman.



He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Charles and Mary Franco of South San Francisco, and Henry and J.J. Franco of Grass Valley; sisters Dorothy House of Waycross, Ga., and Sallie Sheley of Jackson, Mich.; nieces Sallie Johannes of Corpus Christi, Texas, Shalane Cruz of San Leandro, and Sheila McElhaney of Cleveland, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Margaret in 2004; four brothers; three sisters; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.
