In memory of Utah Phillips

Sitting on an Aegean beach laid of magical round, white stone, I say a blessing for Utah and toss it to the Muse.

We’ve just heard the news and breathe deeply, deeply, while holding Joanna and the rest of Utah’s family close in our hearts.

One of my great memories – Utah, standing at Pine/ Commercial in a colorful caftan, white hair loose and flowing from his cap, an imposing figure with a naked rubber chicken in one hand, red clown nose in place, quack quacking at the passing tourists. They scatter, flee to the other side of the street thinking he is some crazed street creature, not knowing they’ve just turned away from one of the Great Wonders of the World.

Thinking of the lessons and laughter he spread, with blessings and love – safe passage, comrade and friend.

Quack quack, Utah.
