Impressed with McClintock and staff at meeting

Tom McClintock, our U.S. representative in Congress, has reached out to his constituents in many ways. I finally attended a constituents’ meeting on Feb. 15. Igor Birman, Tom’s chief of staff, and Kim Pruett, his Nevada County field representative, made some opening remarks, then took questions.

Although there were a few shouting matches from some in the audience and others with narrow interests, for the most part, the meeting was constructive. Some people were quite knowledgeable and informative.

Concerns ranged from the declining value of the dollar to removing roadblocks to reopening the mine. I was impressed by the beauty of democracy in action. The staff stayed focused on Tom’s sincere effort to represent us, but with a reminder that our positions will not always prevail.

One woman asked what we can do. The answer was, “Get involved!” Attend meetings, encourage friends to become more involved, write letters, call talk shows, donate money to candidates across state lines who support your views.

So, I encourage you to do just that. We have someone who is behaving like our representative, not vice versa. And if you want to keep track of Tom’s voting record, Google “Tom McClintock voting record.”
