Home-schoolers earn scholarships

Alex Puleo, a junior at Horizon Instructional System Home School, received the Governor’s Scholarship for excellence in overall math scores on standardized state tests. He was notified of the honor in March.

Glory McVicker, a seventh-grader at the school, won first place in the Creative Expression Category of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Junior American Citizenship contest. Members of the Captain John Oldham Chapter (Grass Valley) selected her entry and have forwarded it to the DAR State organization for competition.

Bryan Couper, an eighth-grader at HIS, has completed training his first guide dog for the Guide Dogs for the Blind organization. The dog, Primo, was presented to his new owner at a ceremony in San Rafael in March.
