A wildland fire destroyed a home south of Grass Valley near Lake of the Pines Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze was reported at 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Magnolia Road and Knolls Drive, on a hill close to several homes.

It started at 1/4-acre and immediately threatened two structures, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Tina Rose said. When firefighters arrived, one of the homes was already in flames and could not be saved, she said.

The other structure was protected.

CDF, U.S. Forest Service, Higgins Area, Nevada County Consolidated, Rough and Ready, Ophir Hill, and Peardale-Chicago Park fire departments responded, as well as a strike team from Butte County.

The fire most likely started alongside Knolls Drive, near the driveway of the home that was destroyed, according to fire officials. It then climbed the hill to reach the home.

It was contained at 10 acres at 3:45 p.m.

Neighbor Terry Madsen said he lived in the home that burned down until 2002, when he sold it to the current resident. Fire officials said they did not know where the resident was at about 4 p.m., but said no one was injured in the blaze.
