Historic bio: Aaron A. Sargent

Aaron A. Sargent

(1827-1887)

One of the chief legislative backers of the transcontinental railroad, Aaron Augustus Sargent served a variety of elected posts from his Nevada City home. After spending his youth in the Northeast, Sargent arrived in Nevada City in 1850. He worked for the Nevada Daily Journal and eventually became its owner. He was the county’s district attorney, a state senator, a U.S. representative, U.S. senator and an ambassador to Germany. He is now buried in Pioneer Cemetery in Nevada City.
