Hiking women take Nevada County school district to new heights

The Sweet 16th Moms on the Mountains (MOMS) annual fundraising hike will take place Saturday, September 25 at Sugar Bowl Resort in Soda Springs. MOMS raises money for technology and arts in the Nevada City School District.

The Nevada City School District, like many districts in California, has faced tough budget challenges in 2010. The Board of Trustees even voted to consolidate the lower elementary schools at Gold Run Elementary, effectively closing the beloved Nevada City Elementary campus. Parents, teachers, administrators and board members continue to work hard to find ways to strengthen and sustain the high quality education provided by the district. They know that a strong public education system is an essential part of a strong community. A significant part of this effort is fundraising.

Moms on the Mountains first hiked upwards in 1995, and every year since then women of all types have gathered in the fall and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support a wide range of arts and technology programs. MOMs proceeds have paid for such things as brand new computer workstations in the Deer Creek School computer lab, ORFF instruments at Gold Run Elementary for music education, and supplies for elective art classes at Seven Hills Middle School. Determined and enthusiastic women coming together can accomplish great things, and this year’s hike will raise a significant amount of money to alleviate some of the budget pressure on arts and technology needs in local schools.

Hikers will gather at 8:30 am on September 25th at Sugar Bowl and choose one of 3 hikes of varying difficulty and length. The event also includes yummy food, massages, prizes, a store and silent auction. Women who don’t want to hike can volunteer, donate to our auction, or even register to attend the event without hiking.

Any woman 18 or older may participate. Each hiker must raise a minimum sponsorship of $55. More information and online registration is available at http://www.momsonthemountains.com or call 470-1166.

Moms on the Mountains is a project of the nonprofit, 19 year old Nevada City School District Foundation, which raises funds to support arts, technology and student support programs at schools in the district. Established in 1995, the annual MOMs hike in the Sierra Nevada has raised over $300,000 to support arts and technology programs in the Nevada City Schools District.
