Higgins Fire District board approves layoffs, staffing changes

Six Higgins Fire District employees will lose their jobs effective July 1 in layoffs forced in part by last year’s failed property tax vote.

Additionally, budgetary concerns led the district to change its staffing levels.

The affected firefighters will learn they’ve been laid off before the month ends. The cuts will save about $500,000, enabling the district to make financial ends meet, said Jerry Good, Higgins battalion chief.

“We won’t gain $500,000 by laying these employees off,” Good added.
