Heyday of california education was ages ago … Time to step up

If you wanted a sneaky way to undermine the future of another nation, you could undermine their educational system: Reduce access to school, reduce supports for students, reduce programs, reduce other classroom support, and reduce resources. To maximize the overall stress on the system, you could simultaneously demand higher performance.

Our state spends less than 45 other states; $2,400 less per pupil than the national average. California will send tens of thousands fewer high school graduates to college next year due to funding, not due to student qualifications.

At what point do we commit ourselves to doing what’s needed to get the job done? To provide steady, sufficient funding? Yes, times are tough, but the heyday of California education was decades ago! Despite endless promises and the passage of Prop 98, we haven’t managed to provide the funding we used to. Public education is getting an 18 percent “furlough” (the funding deficit) compared to what we voted for (the Prop 98 formula).

Is a well-educated populace essential to our economic future, and to a working democracy? So, when do we make it happen? Why are we doing this to ourselves? To our kids? To our collective future?
