Health care issues

Mr. Abby, Mr. Doolittle, Mr. Schwarzenegger and many others, take note. You are behind the times by 30 years. Germany, Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and France do not have a “single payer” health care system, nor do they have what is commonly referred to as government-run socialized medicine. Yet they provide universal coverage and quality health care at a fraction of what we pay in the U.S.

In western Europe, it is called “shared-responsibility health care.” Workers and employers are subject to mandatory payroll deductions, which are deposited into private insurance funds that are nonprofit and government regulated. The insurance funds negotiate strict cost controls with the government and representatives from professional associations of doctors and health care professionals. If these countries can do it, why can’t we?

We know why. Our beloved politicians have “health-care coverage” paid for by the taxpayers. They gleefully accept bribes in the form of “campaign contributions” from the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. In order not to interrupt these lucrative incomes, they refute any proposed changes in the health care system by calling changes “socialized medicine.” They persist in ignoring the fact that our current system is inadequate and a financial disaster.
