Health Care costs

Recently, I had a physical with a local doctor to renew my Class A license for the DMV.

Prior to the visit I asked how much the physical would cost so I could bring a check; my employer pays for this. I was told $72 and, at the time of my visit, I paid by check.

During this visit, the doctor told me I had a hernia and he would refer me to a surgeon. Two weeks later, I received a notice from my insurance that this doctor billed them $84 for this visit. I contacted the doctor’s office and they said that him telling me I had a hernia wasn’t covered under the DMV physical and it was the same as separate visit.

Does this sound normal? Or, is this just another example of “double billing” and over-priced health care? Be aware Nevada County!
