Healing through the power of prayer
Suzie Daggett interviews Dr. Don Moore, pastor of Sierra Vista Covenant Church and director of Healing Rooms of Nevada County.
What is your philosophy on healing?
My faith is in Jesus Christ who I believe wants to bring healing into this world. What He went through was to overcome the works of evil as He brings healing to body, soul, spirit, emotions and will to people.
We don’t need to live with fear, resentment or bitterness. God has
brought healing into my own life as I have learned to deal with an anger problem that stemmed from my early family life. This wonderful change that I have experienced personally has healed me, and encouraged me to help heal others. Part of that work is with Healing Rooms of Nevada County.
What is the history of healing rooms?
Healing rooms were created in Spokane, Wash. by John G. Lake in the ’20s. He was a Christian evangelist from a sickly family who experienced prayer that healed his sister and others. It was said that his ministry resulted in more than 100,000 miracles of healing in a five-year span. After his death, his dream of healing rooms died until 1998, when Cal Pierce, from Bethel Church in Redding, revitalized the healing rooms. Locally, several pastors were looking for a way to offer healing to people. As we looked around for the right model, we found the healing rooms operating in other areas and decided to start one here. We see God speak into peoples’ lives for healing. Mostly Christians come for healing, but we pray for people of any religion or of no religion.
What can Healing Rooms do for people?
Over the years, I have looked at western medicine and realized that sometimes we do a lot of damage to try to help people. In many cases, the medicine is appropriate, but sometimes, it is damaging. In one recent case, we prayed for an 83-year old woman with terminal cancer. The doctors could not offer her any hope or treatment ” there was nothing further to do for her. She was going downhill until she came to the healing room for prayers. After two sessions, she is gardening and feeling fine. Certainly, she still has cancer but she is not in pain and is living life. The effects from the healing room prayer can be dramatic. We have had physical healings, such as a doctor who had knee replacement surgery that continued to bleed. He was in pain and discomfort, and his doctors said there was nothing they could do for him, the bleeding would stop eventually. He came to the healing room and was healed instantly. Some are like that, while some people need to come for many weeks to heal the many levels that they are dealing with. All my life I have been seeking this loving God who heals and will break depression, despair and anger out of people’s life. When you get into God’s presence, healing happens, and that is what the Healing Rooms are about.
What is it like to visit the Healing Room?
The person wanting healing first meets the greeter and fills out a form explaining why they want prayer ” what is their particular situation ” how can we help them? Some people are there for specific physical symptoms, some are living in fear and want that changed, some have emotional or abuse problems they want prayers for. It is a first come, first serve, safe and loving place with healing music to soothe those waiting. There are usually three people who will pray over the client. Those who are praying are receptive to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit; they are trained to love and help. We ask the Lord to show us how to pray for the person, we then command healing to come, and it works.
The session can be from 20 minutes to an hour per person and if the one being prayed for is open to receiving the healing, miracles can happen.
What do you get out of this?
I get the sense that my life really matters, that I am not just preaching, or just practicing religion, but really living the work of God. Watching God work through me and others to see healing happen is deeply satisfying.
