Headline mistake also made by others

On March 31 you printed a letter to the editor that you headed, “Thanks in memorium.” This is incorrect. Memoria, a Latin noun of the first declension, is feminine and therefore takes feminine endings; you mistakenly gave it a masculine/

neuter ending, – um. The correct form would be memoriam.

Don’t feel too bad about your mistake. NASA made the same mistake after the Challenger disaster, and I’ve also seen the same error inscribed on gravestones.
