Harmony Ridge Estates: Woodland Beauty

For those of us who are Bay Area transplants, one of the joys of living in the Foothills is the extraordinary fall color change, and a good place to view the seasonal shift is North Bloomfield and Harmony Estates roads in Nevada City. Pretty pines, cedars, firs and maples are all making the transition from lush green to fiery oranges, reds and yellows.

Residents of Harmony Ridge Estates have all this natural beauty literally in their front and back yards. Harmony Ridge Estates is a very secluded, upscale subdivision along Harmony Estates Road, accessed from North Bloomfield Road. Some of the homes have the added treat of facing northeast, giving residents a spectacular view of the snow capped Sierra and the tree ridge line.

Developed about 15 years ago, Harmony Ridge Estates’ signature features are four to five acre estate properties with large, luxury style homes. Price points are generally in the $1 million plus range, says John Daly, a realtor with Coldwell Banker Grass Roots Realty located on Sutton Way in Grass Valley. Daly has been in the real estate profession for 26 years. Coldwell Banker also has offices on Broad Street in Nevada City and in the Wildwood Center in Penn Valley.



Land is scarce since most of the one to two mile stretch of Harmony Ridge Estates has already been built out. However, Daly is marketing one land parcel, a four acre property with gorgeous views of the Sierra and Mt. Lassen. At the top of the ridge, the parcel is listed at $435,000 and is located off of the cul de sac where the subdivision ends. There has been some tree trimming to further open up the views, says Daly. The property has a well but perc and mantle tests need to be done. “It’s a great opportunity to invest in a beautiful site in a prestigious location of Nevada County,” says Daly.

On Cedar View Road, accessed from Harmony Estates Road, a 4.25 acre property is listed at $999,000. The house is described as a blend of Craftsman and Japanese design.




Nice touches include maple floors and an upstairs living area that is enclosed so residents can enjoy the year round views. There is also a sauna that affords wonderful views from its location. The 3,000-square foot home has four bedrooms and three and a half baths. It features a three car detached garage. Well and septic are in and the roads are paved. PG&E provides the power.

Harmony Ridge Estates residents can enjoy the Gold Rush history of North Bloomfield Road which served as a stagecoach line on the way to Malakoff Diggins, a hydraulic-operated gold mine. Today the mine is a state park offering camping, fishing and trails for the local residents and tourists. Rangers will give visitors a sample of the colorful history of Malakoff Diggins and Gold Rush days. North Bloomfield is also near the Tahoe National Forest with its many hiking trails, particularly pretty with the change of the seasons. At North Bloomfield and Edwards Crossing, the Yuba River affords some great swimming holes.

Dining possibilities are many. Locals like the Willo restaurant for steaks and ribs and nearby, off of Highway 20, is the Five Mile House which offers a beautiful, intimate atmosphere with creative seafood and other dishes. Just down the road is Nevada City’s main commercial district with Sopa’s, a pretty Thai restaurant, and a host of other wining and dining establishments.

Another advantage of Harmony Ridge and North Bloomfield Road is that residents are in the well regarded Nevada City school district.

The Nevada County real estate market continues to be a buyer’s market with lower priced homes in the $300s to $500s showing more movement, says Daly. The ‘super heated’ markets of 2004 and 2005 are over, he says. There has been some pickup lately, he says, with interest rates, in the six to six and a quarter percent range, for a 30-year fixed mortgage. Houses that are selling are priced to reflect the more competitive market.
