GV council race still open

Candidates for the Grass Valley City Council race have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to take out nomination papers and file them with City Clerk Kristi Bashor for the Nov. 4 election.

Incumbent Mayor and council member Mark Johnson did not file by the initial deadline Friday, which extended it to Wednesday. California elections law extends the deadline for city council races unless all incumbents refile for office.

Incumbents Lisa Swarthout and Janet Arbuckle have refiled and are apparent candidates with Rachel Rue, Terry Lamphier, Ed Yarborough and Yolanda Cookson.

As of Monday morning, only Cookson was an official candidate, because her nomination signatures from registered voters have been verified, according to City Clerk Kristi Bashor.

The Nevada County Clerk’s elections office is still scrutinizing the other candidates signatures for ballot verification.
