Guthrie honored at event at library

The Nevada County Library presents “A Tribute to Woody Guthrie” Saturday for all ages as part of a month of celebrations for the centennial of John Steinbeck’s birth.

Guthrie’s Dust Bowl ballads reflected the same times and concerns as Steinbeck’s works. Guthrie composed more than 3,000 songs, including “This Land Is Your Land.”

Saturday’s free tribute includes performances by Utah Phillips, Bodhi Busick, Charlie Brock and Marina Bokelman.

The family event begins with a sing-along for young audience members at 7 p.m. The tribute includes readings of Guthrie’s writings and a performance by Phillips of his “The Ballad of Tom Joad.”

The event ends at 9:30 p.m. The Nevada County Library is at 980 Helling Way, Nevada City.
