Grass Valley to vote on busy intersection

The intersection at East Main Street, Idaho-Maryland Road and the Golden Center Freeway in is expected to get more congested as businesses along those streets expand.

Grass Valley City Council members will vote on whether to accept more traffic there during their regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. tonight. City Hall is located at 125 East Main St. in Grass Valley.

Traffic from several business expansions planned for those roads are expected to caused increased delays at the stop signs there. City traffic policy requires that increased delays of more than 2 seconds trigger some measure that would deal with the increase to restore the level of service.

City staff is recommending that council members create an exception to the traffic policy that would allow them to accept a lower level of service for an interim period.

That would give city engineers time to evaluate short-term improvements to the intersection that would ease congestion until larger, regional projects could be built.

The roundabout that council members also will learn about at tonight’s meeting is one of the long-term fixes being considered for that intersection.

Other regional projects that could help in the long run include the proposed Dorsey Drive interchange on Highway 49/20.
