Grass Valley, Penn Valley will host disc golf championship

The region’s biggest disc golf tournament of the year, the NorCal Series Championships, takes place Saturday and Sunday in Grass Valley and Penn Valley.

Some of the nation’s top professional disc golfers will be on hand, including Josh Anthon of Rio Linda and Jim Oates of Orangevale.

“If you’ve ever seen people playing disc golf and wondered what the sport is all about, this is the perfect time to come out and join the fun,” said tournament director Jennifer Knisley, a co-owner of Final 9 Sports in Orangevale and Rocklin. “We’re proud to play host as the best players in Northern California compete for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes.”

The championship format will alternate play between two local courses. The layout includes a round of 18 holes for both professional and amateur divisions at Grass Valley’s Condon Park and Penn Valley’s Western Gateway Park Saturday and one round of 18 holes starting about 9 a.m. Sunday in Penn Valley. The public is encouraged to come watch the action. Park entry is free.

Knisley, who also serves as a California state representative for the Professional Disc Golf Association, expects a field anywhere between 150 and 180 players.

The NorCal Series championships are open to both professional and amateur disc golfers, but space is limited. For information, call (916) 719-1132 or download a flyer at http://www.norcalseries.com.
