Grass Valley murder trial to begin Tuesday

The murder trial of Steven Medlyn is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning in Nevada County Superior Court.

Medlyn, 34, is charged with the murder of 75-year-old Grass Valley resident Mary Spratt, found strangled to death in her Empire Street apartment May 4, 2007.

The trial is expected to last three weeks, with testimony from Spratt’s neighbors, forensic experts and police investigators, according to Assistant District Attorney Anna Ferguson.

Ferguson is scheduled to begin her opening statement at 9 a.m. Tuesday, followed by an opening statement from Medlyn’s lawyer Keri Goodrow.
