Grass Valley man dies in Yuba City motorcycle accident

A 37-year-old Grass Valley man died from injuries suffered in a Yuba City traffic accident Sunday afternoon.

According to the Yuba City Police Department, Christopher G. Hudgens was killed when his motorcycle was involved in a four-vehicle collision on the 10th Street Bridge over the Feather River. Investigators said the crash occurred when two bags of trash flew out of a westbound pickup, causing other motorists to slow and stop.

Witnesses said the crash occurred as the Grass Valley motorcyclists were returning from a Mendocino music festival.

Five motorcyclists were also approaching the stopped vehicles. The first motorcyclist was able to change lanes and avoid a stopped vehicle. The next three motorcyclists crashed, hitting the rear of the SUV and colliding into each other. The last motorcyclist was able to stop safely.

In addition to Hudgens, the motorcyclists were identified as Dennis D. McManus of Grass Valley; Jessica Steele, 25, of Grass Valley, who was a passenger on McManus’ vehicle; and Katie A. Tamagni, 42, of Grass Valley.

McManus and Tamagni were seriously injured and airlifted to area hospitals.

Steele was able to walk away from the accident.

The 10th Street bridge was closed for six hours as traffic investigators gathered evidence and surveyed the scene with the help of the city’s engineering team.
