Grass Valley man accused of assaulting victims with walking stick in the woods

A Grass Valley transient accused of fracturing two men’s bones with a walking stick remained Monday in the Nevada County Jail under $50,000 in bond, authorities said.

Kevin James Lucas, 28, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury, jail reports state.

The charges stem from a Saturday afternoon assault in some woods in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive, Grass Valley Police Sgt. Clint Bates said.

Two men and a boy were playing with Airsoft guns when Lucas confronted them, Bates said.

“There were some words exchanged,” the sergeant said. “It was Lucas threatening the victims.”

Lucas then assaulted the men with a walking stick, fracturing some bones. He threw a rock at the boy, missing him, Bates said.

The victims ran from the area and called police, he added.

“They reported being assaulted by a subject they knew from an apartment complex in the area,” Bates said.

Officers began searching for Lucas, finding him Sunday in the 12000 block of East Main Street. They arrested him without incident, the sergeant said.

“During the interview, he did not say very much,” Bates added. “He denied all involvement.”

The victims were treated for their wounds and released, Bates said.
