Grand Jury: Fire plan needs teeth

The Nevada County Grand Jury report released today recommended supervisors re-assess the county fire plan, calling on the board to return the “teeth” to the safety element of the county’s General Plan.

In April the board shifted its focus from “mandates and requirements to persuasion and cooperation,” the report said.

The modified fire plan “does not provide the governmental structure or funding process originally envisioned” and “fails to meet Nevada County citizens’ desperate needs,” the report said.

The grand jury recommended that the board begin a public education program to increase public awareness of fire services and how they are financed.

Voter approved increased financing for fire protection could favorably influence insurance rates, the report also concluded.
