Google Fiber will first roll out at Stanford

Google has picked a test site for its lightning-fast fiber Internet connections – Stanford University.

While the project will bring the technology to 850 private homes and condominiums on the main campus, owned primarily by Stanford faculty, it’s separate from the Google Fiber for Communities project Nevada City applied for.

Google plans to announce, by the end of the year, one or more communities to receive the fiber connections. The project will serve between 50,000 and 500,000 people.

Nevada City bid for the project along with hundreds of thousands of others.
