Go ‘Around the World’ with Foothill Theatre
When Phileas Fogg wagers £20,000 (about $38,000 at today’s rate) that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days, he is totally confident he can do it. After all, it is a simple mathematical calculation, isn’t it? Maybe not.
And so the story of “Around the World in 80 Days” unfolds in this play of 24,000 miles and 39 characters played by five actors in two magical hours.
Presented by the Foothill Theatre Company and directed by Philip Sneed, the cast features FTC’s new Artistic Director Scott Gilbert, Karyn Casl, Gary Wright, Carolyn Howart, and Jon Tracy (last seen in “The Nerd”) of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The set is highly creative. Says Gilbert, “You come into the theater and all you see is a big map backdrop, a table, chair, and piles of junk. Out of that, we make everything we need to get around the world.”
Even though this is a Jules Vern story from 130 years ago, travel challenges seemed to haunt that era, as well. “This is one of the first great books about travel issues,” says Gilbert, “and since we live in an age of travel and travel issues, there are interesting parallels.”
Fogg himself seems unfazed by unfinished railways, hostile ships’ captains, suspicious detectives, shady elephant salesmen, a typhoon on the high seas, and an Apache Indian attack (“all foreseen” he says). But a rescue of an imperiled Hindu princess demonstrates there may be unmathematical and unforeseen reasons for such travel.
In an aside, what took Fogg 80 days so long ago now takes only 67 hours – a record set only days ago by pilot Steve Fossett in his single-engine jet as he flew nonstop solo around the globe without refueling.
