Gladys Stokes

Memorial services for Gladys E. Stokes of Grass Valley will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.

Mrs. Stokes died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 80.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1922, in Mooreland, Okla., to Charlie Leander Marts and Hattie Mae Pinkston. She married Lyle Stokes on Dec. 24, 1949, in Arkansas. She worked as a cook and waitress and was a member of the Bartenders and Culinary Union in San Francisco. She enjoyed reading and horseback riding.



She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Vickie Stokes of Grass Valley; grandson Paul Stokes of Sacramento; sister Fern Davenport of Houston; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Stokes, in 1997.




Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
